Default Power steering fluid for 2002 ES300?

I'm getting ready to change my transmission fluid so I figured I'd change the PS fluid too. Does the 2002 ES300 take the Toyota type IV ATF? Or is there something better? how many quarts does it take as well.... Thanks again for all the help...

The fluid it takes is written on the cap, in your case Dexron II/III or compatible. You could probably use T-IV will no ill effects but that is not certain so stick with Dexron type ATF. I don't know the capacity maybe 3 liters.

Lexus2000 is being prudent, especially since DexIII is cheap and everywhere. And I think that's why they left the PS reservoir cap unchanged instead of making it say "DexII/III or TIV."

TIV would work fine if you have it left over. It is based on DexIII and just has added friction modifiers. Since the PS system relies on the viscosity and lubricity of the fluid and not the friction modifiers (no clutches in it), it won't know the difference.

I think the system is only about a quart - I flushed it once. It's also OK to just drain the reservoir by pulling a hose, refilling it, then repeating that after running it. That will get you about 75% fluid w/o the hassle of jacking it and pumping it all out. If you do want to do a full flush, here's a good DIY:

If I were about to flush it, and the car were higher mileage or unknown service history, I would also consider adding a few ounces of Seafoam or B12 to it for a cleaning cycle a week before flushing (good for a tranny, too). I also like adding lubegard Red to the at and PS system - an ounce of it in the PS and the rest in the AT. The ester oil chemistry of it has real benefits for seal health, improved heat transfer, and system cleanliness. It's not snake oil.
