Default Fuel Filter

Does anyone ever replace the fuel filter on their Lex? I never even thought about replacing this, but my friend at work tonight said that it's a good idea.

The fuel filter change seems to have always been a debatable issue. Some people argue that it should never be changed, while others say it should be every 60K miles. I've never replaced a fuel filter myself, although the dealership did that to my '96 ES when I dropped in for the 90K service (part costed $40). Unless you suspect that you have been filling your gas tank with poor quality gas, the fuel filter should pretty much last a lifetime on your Lexus.

Thanks for the reply. I always use 94 octane Sunoco gas, but I'm not sure what the previous owner put in. I've never really had great gas mileage on my '95 ES.

If fuel mileage is your main concern, then changing the fuel filter won't make any difference. There are a few ways you can do to improve the mileage. One is to internally clean the fuel injectors by putting in a bottle of fuel injector cleaner fluid. The Chevron w/ Techron Concentrate is the best brand to use, highly recommended; you can find it in any auto parts store.

Another way is to change your air filter since it may be quite dirty. Most people advise going to K&N as the brand of air filter to see improvement in gas mileage, but I am fine with sticking to OEM.

Lastly, these are "common-sense" check-ups, and they include checking your oil and tire pressure, and reducing A/C usage and need for acceleration. The condition of your spark plugs and oxygen sensors also plays a role, but not as significantly as the other sources. Hope this info helps.
