Does a K&N Filter improve sound?

I used to have an LS400 and there was a cheap air intake mod to add a dramatic intake noise on WOT.
I now have an ES330 and realize that such a mod is not possible, but was wondering if I did replace the stock filter with a K&N would it make a difference in the sound?
I would assume not as the stock airbox is likely very muffling.
And yes, I completely understand that there are negligible or negative improvements to actual power most intake mods, but I'm willing to sacrifice a few ponies for a better noise on WOT
Thanks for any replies

If you want more intake noise remove the resonator inside the fender.

The resonator is located in front of the left front tire and you need to remove the plastic cladding of the wheel well to get what looks like a black box with rounded edges that has a tube that sticks out the top of it. There is a metal bracket with two bolts that holds it in.
