Default Replacing the windshield

I got a rock chip this evening and it turned into a foot long crack within an hour. I have to wait until this weekend to see it's repairable if worst comes to worst, has anyone had luck with an aftermarket windshield? I've always heard aftermarket isn't as quiet and strong as OEM. I'm guessing it would be about $400 if I went through lexus with my discount.

I've NEVER seen a rock chip do this so fast. Insane. I was in traffic watching it spread.

I have had that happen and it sure is frustrating - watching it grow.

If you get on it fast and drill the end, you can stop it spreading (this disperses the load area and generally arrests the crack - then the small hole is filled with the crack and is fairly invisible). The general rule is if it's much over a foot, or runs to within 2" of the edge, no one will repair it..

I have had good success with replacement windshields. I have had many over the years because of gravel trucks in this area. I have an independent guy I go to and it's usually $200 and tax, and he does a superb job. Look around for independent glass guys and mobile shops, they can also talk about different grade glass options.

Thanks Oro. The good thing is it's not close to the edge. I'm surprised you didn't say I should stick with a Lexus one

Also check your insurance policy. Depending on your coverage, replacement may be covered without a deductible.

Great it spread even more while I was at work. I'm wondering if I should even spend more than $100 on replacing the windshield in a big city. It's going to happen again.

Oro have you noticed any noise or a weird tint with any aftermarkets? I want one that will be the exact same as Lexus just without the name on it. I've seen funky aftermarkets.

It is too bad you didn't have an opportunity to fix the chip before it extended to a crack. My insurance does unlimited chip repairs for free, it is cheaper than replacing a windshield.

Unfortunately replacement will sometimes cost you a deductible.

It spread to about a foot and a half. I called around Saturday to have someone at least seal it but they couldn’t because of the rain. So now I’m waiting until this weekend. I think I’ll just seal it and leave it alone for now. It’s not that bad...I guess.

It’s been raining every weekend since this happened but I was able to get it done today finally. I researched and found a guy who’s been doing this since the 80s. He was able to get the entire crack really thin so I’m happy. Looks a million times better.

I got mine replaced with glass from Safelite (because Geico didnt wanna do OEM) and wind-noise from windshield increased. When i ran my hand through the glass i could feel a little hump when going top to bottom. In the end *****ing enough to Geico and having the dealer personally talk to them i got OEM. Lower wind-noise and no hump that i could feel. Not to mention wipers were not as sensitive with aftermarket one.
