Engine Knock and Rattle - Need Help
Hey everyone. I have a 1999 es300 with around 318,000 miles. Recently it has been making a pretty bad knocking sound on the output side of the engine, towards the top. I'm plan to tear down the engine to try and find the problem, but I though I'd try and see if any of y'all had any better ideas of what specifically it might be before I did that. I attached an audio clip of the engine running and revving.
Also,
is the link to the video source of that audio clip on Youtube.
Let me know your thoughts/recommendations on what might be causing it. Thank you!

First impression is timing belt noise.

Yes, I agree. When did you last change the timing belt and (importantly) the timing belt tensioner?

I got her at 236k miles and I have never changed the belt or any of its components. I checked the carfax service report and there is no mention of a timing belt replacement anywhere, so I assume it's way past it's expected lifespan. I'll probably pick up a kit from Napa this weekend and change the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump.

In my experience, a tensioner making that much noise can fail at any time. I would not drive it.
You can narrow down the sound by probing with a really big screwdriver or even metal rod; you can hear the noise by putting it next to your ear. You can quickly remove the accessory belt to make this safer.

Dont get NAPA stuff, water pump especially. Can pick up OEM from Rockauto.
