It has happened to my 2000 Lexus ES300 this afternoon. While I was pumping gas the spring clip came loose from the gas cap door and it fell on the ground so now the gas cap door won't pop open when I push the button inside the car. The open mechanism works fine but because there is no spring clip behind to push the door outward so the door just won't pop open. I still can open it by performing my one man operation: I open the trunk and with my right hand I would pull the emergency gas cap door string or lever and with my left hand I would reach over and easily lift to open the gas cap door. Good thing the emergency gas cap door string or lever is on the same side with the gas tank so I can reach over. (It should be on the same side with the gas tank. Who would design a car with the emergency pull down lever on opposite side with the gas tank?)
Now I don't know exactly where or how the spring clip should be re-attached to the gas cap door. Would someone who owns a 2000 Lexus ES300 like mine please post a picture of your gas cap door that shows where the spring clip should be? I would much appreciate it. Thank you. (See attached photos of the spring clip)
