Unhappy 2000 ES300 Misfire

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me. I have a 2000 ES300 platinum with about 240K miles. I am getting the following codes:

1. P0300
2. P0301
3. P0302
4. P0303
5. P0304
6. P0305
7. P0306
8. P0446

I addition, the car idles rough, does not want to go into high gear, and the CEL sometimes blinks. This is all reported to me from my son who is about 100 miles away. In addition, based on his research, he cleaned the air intake.

During the past year I replaced the VVTs ~5K mikes ago) and did the timing belt (~10K miles ago).

When looking through the forums I see that there can be multiple possibilities. Any thoughts or links are appreciated!

Regards,
greens6

It sounds to me like you have a bad ignition coil on one of the cylinders. My daughter has a 2000 ES300 and I've had to replace 4 of the 6 coils over the past 5-7 years. You will need to determine which coil is bad by process of elimination since you are getting random codes. You can get the coil through Advance Auto. Place your order online and use promo code SPPF18 for 25% off your purchase through Wednesday 11/21. All of the codes you are getting are misfire codes. P0300 is a random misfire and each of the other codes represent the cylinders except for P0446 which is associated with the EVAP system. It could have been triggered by the misfire causing the voltage to fluctuate to the ECM. You may have 1 or more bad coils but I start with the front cylinders which are 2,4 & 6 as cylinders 1,3,& 5 can be a bear to get to. I hope this helps.

Thank you. we cleared all these codes and P0306 returned. First I moved the cylinder 6 coil to #5 and the problem followed the coil. I replaced the bad coil and the car seems to be running OK now.

I guess I should plan to replace them all at some point.

Thanks again!

I would replace them as they fail. I've replaced 5 of the 6 over the last 6 years so unless you plan on keeping the car, it's not feasible to replace them all in my opinion. Glad I could help.

When was the last time you replaced the spark plugs?

I replaced the spark plugs when I did the timing belt and valve cover gaskets...about 20K miles/1 year ago. Thanks!

If I was the primary driver I'd just replace them when they failed. But if the primary driver was a vulnerable person with a long commute I'd replace them all so she would not be stranded a long way from home.
