what needs to be purchased to lower a car? is it just springs? what brand is recommended for a 1"-1.5" drop?

Eibach is a very reputable name.
There Pro-Kit gives a 1" drop for the 92 Camry 6cyl (MCV10).

You'll also want to upgrade your struts when you lower the car, I'd expect to pay in the $500-$600 range uninstalled.

eibach doesn't lower the car enough...it cost me around 200 bucks to get them lowered by a shop with INTRAX springs for a V6 Camry. 1.6" drop. Very satisfied. I didn't replace struts and the ride is still remarkably smooth. Knock on wood.
