Brake booster going out on an ES is very rare. I've never heard of the flatblade to the gasket deal. Thats the sort of crap that my industry has to deal with. Dishonest mechanics, I'd like to shoot them all.

Yea, I understand your sentiment. I was very angry for a time. But soon realised like anything there are just some bad apples. So to get back at my old shop I am never going back and would not ever recommend them to anyone. Any business looking to spike their profit dishonestly will eventually be found out.

lextek it's the oldest trick in the book.

It dosen't even have to ruin the gasket. You just put something convient (flat screewdriver) and put it where the master meets the booster. Give it the slightest love tap and it'll move the master ever so slightly off the booster.
