P0500 CV Axle Noise
#16
^This was the result after two different shops taking a look at it. After calling a transmission shop, they said they would rebuild/warranty for $1800-2000 (rough estimate). I called a relative who is in need of a first car for their daughter, and since the car is in otherwise great shape, has been maintained religiously, and I don't need it, I told them they can have the car, if they pay for the transmission repair. In both mine and their eyes, $2000 for a good solid first car is a hard ask, at least here, they'll get a car that has a good history and a new transmission. I don't make any money on it, but I also don't have to pay for any repairs, so I don't mind. Transmission shop offers free towing, so they will pick the car up directly from the dealer, and go from there.

Well, the clear answer is it’s a transaxle issue and not pure transmission issue. If it is a good shop, they’ll examine the transaxle and possibly avoid an actual rebuild.
Good move on passing the value on where needed to a friend. Just went through finding a first car for a step son. $2k to get into that would have been like a gift.

I've never seen a differential fail like that not without making horrendous noises and the car still drove it never lost power to the point where the car stopped.

Neither have I, and I’ve also never seen a 2002+ ES transmission fail, which is why I’m really shocked, especially on a maintained/not abused car. Have had it for almost 100k miles now, and has given zero hint at a problem until the time the car stopped moving. The car only rarely had the flaring up problem that these transmissions are known for, and when it did occur, it was minimal at best.
I’m slightly hopeful that the transmission shop finds something new, but I’m doubtful

The one good thing about the similarities between the ES and the Camry is diagnosing problems. While a much older car, the symptoms are extremely similar.

I would genuinely want to lift this and sort it out. This is weird.

Did yours make any other noises on the driver side prior to this happening? Reason I ask, I have a 2000 ES300 with 168,800k. Everytime I make a left turn while driving, I hear a pop and same when I bring the car back to straight from a left turn, but on the drivers side only. Won't make the sound while the car is sitting still in the driveway while running and turning to wheel nor while it is on jack stands.
Had a similar sound years ago and it ended up being worn out sway bar links. Those are brand new now but the noise persists.
Sorry to hear about your car.

Just an update, the transmission shop said that an internal failure was causing the right side CV joint to pop out, and even though they could pop it back in, on tight turns, it would immediately pop out again on left turns. They will let me know specifically what broke once they get deeper into it, but had to do with a differential failure, not the transmission.
Said theyve never ever seen something like this, and where especially shocked it was on a Toyota/Lexus transmission

Hmmm that sounds suspiciously like only an axle failure. Maybe the retaining clip broke and is stuck in the transmission so the axle won't stay in. I mean it could be simply a differential failure....

I was leaning towards axle failure since the beginning, but after three shops telling me it was/likely an internal failure, I'm accepting it. After some research, theres recorded (albeit not many) issues with camrys of different vintage, having similar problems, and it ended up being a failed differential in all their cases.

$1950 out the door for a rebuilt transmission, new transmission mount, new cv axle (because splines on old one were damaged) and a 1 year warranty.
Not a bad deal at all, at least in my mind, especially in comparison to the $5900 the dealer wanted to charge for a replacement transmission, without labor. Even the service advisor there suggested bringing to independent transmission shop.
