Default P0500 CV Axle Noise

I've never seen this problem before, so I figured I would reach out.

2004 ES300 with 140k.

The other day while turning left, the car's acceleration stopped. The car made a grinding noise as if the CV axle/joint was broken. I had it towed to the shop, and the next day when they started it, it drove around the block absolutely fine, until they turned left again, the same thing happened. Car could not accelerate, and made a noise similar to that of a P0500 code.

Today, I picked it up to bring to the dealer, and it drove onto the tow truck absolutely fine, no grinding noise, and was driving fine. HOWEVER, the car did trigger a P0500 code, which is a speed sensor code.

Is it possible the speed sensor is working with the traction control module to cut power to the wheels, and that grinding noise is actually the traction control kicking in or something? I'm really perplexed, and hoping to have an idea before the dealer tears into it.

The previous shop did not want to work on it because they could not pinpoint exactly what was the issue and start throwing parts at it. The transmission fluid is clean and changed religiously.

Is it possible the transmission is cooked? Which I doubt given the problem is intermittent.

Thanks in advance.

The axle is probably going bad either one of the joints, the tone ring, or both. It's possible the tone ring is coming apart and damaged the wheel speed sensor that would explain the code.

Thats what I originally thought, but what made me question it was the fact that the problem is intermittent

When the wheel turns the CV joint flexes so it might be failing only at certain angles. Either way the car needs to be lifted and inspected I would drive it as little as possible.

^Car is currently sitting at the dealer, so if its being driven, it's by a mechanic trying to diagnosis it.

Seems straightforward, find out why the speed sensor code is being tripped and go from there. They have fancy scan tools the tech can look at real time speed sensor data as he drives.

Yeah, the first shop did not have the ability to scan the codes to the extent the dealer does, and was the one that suggested I bring it to the dealer. Shop is extremely competent, so I was surprised, but I guess I prefer that to them trying to fix something they didn't know the answer to and just throw parts at the car.

I'm surprised, the average scanner a shop has will do the job. Don't take this as a criticism I'm wondering why you made this thread to ask about the problem, I'm guessing a part of you doesn't trust the dealership, or because the first shop bailed on trying to repair?

Intermittent problems can a pain to find here's an example

I’m just trying to rule out the possibility of it being something major, like an internal failure in the transmission, and despite the circumstances, see if it was possible for it to still be a CV axle. I’m weary though because if it was something simple like that, the first shop would have caught it.

I told myself if it’s less than $1500 to repair, fine. Anything over, I’m letting the dealer buy it off me for essentially whatever they offer.

Ive had it since 2013 with 52k miles and paid 10k out the door. After 6 years and 100k, car has only needed the basics, but since it’s an extra car, I have no reason to dump money into it and in my mind, it’s more than paid for itself.

140k, second owner, fluid always changed every 30k. It’s a 15 year old car, what you going to do. Dealer said they’d give me $900, so I’m giving them the keys and the title on Monday when I’m back in town

Wow, that's unusual with an 02+ because the U151E is a really durable transmission.

I would call and see what shop could drop a used one in for you. I would definitely not hesitate to get a reasonable mileage one of these from a wreck and drop it in, and you can likely do that for $1500 or less.

I would recommend at least getting a second opinion.

^This was the result after two different shops taking a look at it. After calling a transmission shop, they said they would rebuild/warranty for $1800-2000 (rough estimate). I called a relative who is in need of a first car for their daughter, and since the car is in otherwise great shape, has been maintained religiously, and I don't need it, I told them they can have the car, if they pay for the transmission repair. In both mine and their eyes, $2000 for a good solid first car is a hard ask, at least here, they'll get a car that has a good history and a new transmission. I don't make any money on it, but I also don't have to pay for any repairs, so I don't mind. Transmission shop offers free towing, so they will pick the car up directly from the dealer, and go from there.
