Starting Issues (No Power)
2001 ES300 ~100K
When I turn the key in the ignition nothing is happening: no accessory power starts, the engine will not click. All power is disengaged from the car: I cannot open the trunk or shift into neutral. This happened once before when I splashed into a puddle and then after a day of drying in started right up. It was wet again yesterday but will still not start this morning. It took a jump yesterday to start but then stalled out when I put it into drive. Last time, as it dryed out a little, I heard the CD turn back on and search for discs but it still did not start until the next day. the battery is new this year. Any ideas of what may be wrong? Thanks!

If you lose all power and this has happened before, the “wet” problem appears to be in your main power fuse/relay compartment under your hood. It’s located on the driver’s side of the motor.

Wire brushed the battery terminals and wiring harness and it started right up. There was some corrosion on the anode, so it was surprising that it reduced the voltage enough to prevent even the dash from lighting up or the trunk from opening. Hopefully, that was the only issue.

If this problem has occurred before, then consider the charging aspect of your battery as suffering also. If the connection isn’t supplying enough voltage to engage relays for dash lights or open your trunk, then your battery likewise is not getting enough of a connection to get properly charged by the alternator/voltage regulator.
At rest your battery should read 12.4 to 12.6 VDC with a specific gravity of 1.265 at 80 degrees. At 12.4 VDC, your battery is considered roughly 75% charged and 100% charged at 12.6 VDC or above. While running your car the voltmeter readings across battery poles should read roughly 13.7 - 14.7 VDC. If it isn’t within this range and your battery is also measuring low, your alternator has a problem also.
Cold weather is a death knell to weak batteries, so be sure to check this out before winter moves in. Here’s a good link to read about car batteries and easy maintenance tips on this subject.
