So does the key have any affect on whether the vehicle will start. My key has separated from the housing however I am able to fix it but does the key prevent the car from starting if it's not assembled and functioning properly

Hello,
Do you mean that your key part separated from a key housing?
If so, you can test if you have an immobilizer in your car - try starting the car with just a key, if it will not start, put the key housing near the lock and try starting again, it should start up. If it still won't start up, you have a different kind of issue.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

Actually, the Valet key still has an immobilizer chip in it, the only difference is that it cannot open a trunk and a glove box, and it cannot be used to program a new key.
