A little followup to help the next guy... make sure you pay attention to the ball joint cotter pin and the orientation of it when you bend it. I wasn't careful and the axle boot hit it making a small hole on each side. This resulted in a HUGE mess of grease on the driver's side and a small amount on the passenger side. I fixed the cotter pins and now have to replace the axles. $150 lesson learned. Oh well, would need axles eventually...
Or you could just replace the boot for $10...and a lot of mess.
Slightly off topic follow up. Here you can see the very small hole in the boot from the cotter pin. As the boot rotated with the axle, the grease was flung out, making a huge mess. Got both axles swapped out and new cotter pins put in for the ball joints. If you're going to do the axles, which was very easy, make sure you have new output seals for the transmission. I didn't have any problems with the passenger side, but the driver's side... the spring on the inside portion of the seal came out. I put it back together and it is weeping slightly. Nothing too bad, just have to take it apart again when the replacement seal shows up hopefully this week. Wish I would have had one on hand...
I was really nervous for the removal of the passenger side axle with the bearing housing but being a southern car, it slid right out after two light taps with a punch. The 1A Auto axles seem to be of good quality and the shipping was very fast.
