fast idle won's shift into 4th, overheating

Success, almost. I'm a bit surprised the air trapped was that bad usually it works its way out after a few drives. You really need to check the ECU temp sensor via a scan tool. On the EGR I once rebuilt and installed an engine forgot to tighten the EGR tube engine would never start. Took me a bit figure out why thought I had mistimed the engine.
You sure the EGR system is not leaking? If it does that's the same as a vacuum leak, well it is a vacuum leak but we usually don't think of it that way.

That's great news, especially since it was an inexpensive fix!
Regarding the high idle, check the throttle linkage for binding and full range of movement. There's a change the butterfly is not fully closing at idle.

Removed and cleaned the idle control valve. It was basically stuck. Hit it with some brake cleaner, reinstalled, idles at 700 RPM when warm! Thanks again for the suggestions and help. Scott
