Default Auto Locking

Am I crazy, or did my '02 ES 300 (traded in this week for an '03 LS430) have an "auto lock" feature that automatically locked the doors if you exited the vehicle and took the key...about 30 seconds after that? It seems to me this was the case. My LS doesn't do that, however, and I am wondering if maybe I was wrong about the ES doing that too and just imagining it.

Daryll40...the ES was great, by the way, but it just whetted my appetite for the LS!

Daryl, I don't know about exiting the vehicle and taking the keys if the car automatically locks.

I do know that on the 02 ES and greater, if you are outside the ES and unlock the car with the remote and do not open the door, in 30 seconds it will relock itself.

My 92 ES300 re-lock's after about 30 seconds if you unlock it with the button, and don't open one of the front doors. Never had it lock itself after exiting though.

To my knowledge, starting around 1998 or so - Lexus has something called C-BEST. With this you can customize some of your car's functions to the things you like, such as how long the headlights stay on after you exit the car, whether the doors lock automatically, etc... Since Lexus seems to update these controllable functions every model year, I would check with your Lexus dealer to find out if this function is available or not.

In my '96 ES, I used to have this occurrence where the doors would automatically lock at different times after I exit the car, change CDs in the trunk, etc. I don't believe it's supposed to happen on a 1st-gen ES. I think it's sort of a fluke or glitch with the chip in the master key, leading to miscommunication with the key sensor in the car. I know a few other 1st-gen ES owners have run into the same problem. I think we all grow to accept in time

On my '01 ES, the door lock deal after exiting the vehicle has never occurred. Like others said, it'll play out when you unlock with your remote master and not open any of the front doors after 30 sec.

Hey guys, I have been an avid reader of this forum for quite some time, but recently I actually took the time to create an account instead of just reading all the posts. This is my first post.

I am quite familiar with the auto-lock feature of the 1st gen ES300's. One day after work, having just recently acquired my ES, I unlocked it with the button, opened the REAR door and threw in a sweatshirt, lunch etc. into the back seat, and being as I was about to open the driver's side door and get in, I unwittingly tossed the keys onto my driver's seat.

Don't do that.

Naturally, the exact moment I shut the rear door before opening the driver's door, I heard the familiar 'click' of the car locking itself, with my keys right in front of me, on the seat... taunting me. If that car had the ability to speak, it would have been giggling for a good half hour.

Needless to say, a good 45 minutes was spent waiting in the parking lot for my dad to come with the spare. On the up-side however, during my stint in the parking lot, the cute girl that worked across the office noticed me and my Lexus, and struck up a conversation. We ended up going out to dinner later that night.

Now aren't you glad you did do that?

Well i dont know what u really mean but when i had a loaner 02 ES, the doors locked automatically when you changed the gear in something other that PARK. Is that what you mean? As soon as the door closed and I put the car in REVERSE, the doors locked automatically so that you wont forget to lock them. Its a safety thing i guess.

No, that is not what I meant but, yes, I think ALL Lexus cars have a feature that locks the doors when you put them into DRIVE. (I think that can be programmed not to lock, too, by the dealer...but I liked that feature).

What I am talking about is when you GET OUT of the car...about a minute after the last door closes the doors lock.
