Default Occasional no indication on temp guage

Maybe 1 out of every 20 times I drive my 92 ES300 the temp guage will stay down below the C, and never move. I'll go in the store, or wherever, and 5 minutes later I start the car, and the guage goes up, and seems to work fine. Anybody know what the deal is? Also, when it is working, it's right in the middle of the range. Is that where it should be under normal driving conditions? Thanks for any help.

right in the middle is just where you want to be.

as for the intermitant reading, check the connection to the coolant temp. sensor. Is the CEL coming on when the temp gauge is not moving? If not, then it may be the connection into the back of the gauge in the dashboard.

Yeah everything lights up like it's supposed to. It just doesn't move. Could you tell me where the temp sensor that sends info to the guage is located? I know on most cars there's one for the guage, and one for the computer.
