Hey guys. How much do the part numbers matter when matching engine computers? How much difference can there be with the same engine, transmission, etc. I can understand the differences between the California emissions VS federal emissions. I'm just having a heck of a time finding the ECM I need. BTW the pay number I have is 89661-33440. I assume it's federal emissions because the car was originally sold in Virginia, but I don't know how to tell for sure. Any help is appreciated. I'd really like to get this thing on the road.
That should be an easy part to find did you try car-part.com? It is best practice to always exactly match the part number, in your case 1995 and 1996 will probably work, but if you put a newer ECU into your car it might not function properly. Only one way to find out.
I wouldn't try and mix Japan made Denso ECU with USA made.

Yes I've been looking through car - part. I have found several listings but only maybe a third of them have the part number listed. I call and they say it hasn't been pulled so they don't know which part number is in it. The last lady had the right number but said it was California emissions and I'd have to find out if mine was too. How can you tell?
Well, according to that sticker it might be a California spec car. I double checked the Vin tags to make sure the hood hadn't been changed, also. I really wasn't expecting that.
And thank you for your help and info! I've been trying to get a computer for this thing since May. All these rebuilders are a bunch of crooks, seems like.
edit - I looked up a 1995 this is what it shows
89661-06170 *ND USA (04/1994 - 07/1994)
89661-06210 *ND USA (08/1994 - 07/1995)
89661-33340 *ND (08/1993 - 07/1994)
89661-33430 *ND (08/1994 - 07/1995)
89661-33440 CALIFORNIA SPEC
I typed in the wrong number when I did a search so ignore post #4
Well I appreciate that. It's actually good news because I found one last week only a couple hours from me, that was the right part number and California spec. Now to find it again...
