I asked the shop to do this, only to find out it's "internal" (self-contained somehow and not readily accessible)...they advised unless some symptoms appear to let it go. That seems awfully dicey to me. Appreciate any insights!

2002+ has no fuel filter under the hood there is one as part of the fuel pump (inside the fuel tank), not considered a maintenance item. That shop is correct.

Appreciate the feedback. What about the fuel pump itself? Also an "if it aint broke don't fix it" thing? Looking on the net, replacement costs seem to vary wildly.

Fuel pump filter can clog at times usually from the car not being driven for long periods. Normally it's not something you ever have to deal with.
