Default New Member & Extended oil change interval

Hi, new member been lurking long enough, when debating to buy an older ES would almost always come here to see what the topics where about. You all have a great forum! My previous car was a 95 Honda Accord and about eight to ten years ago decided to use Mobil 1 Extended Performance motor oil and filter for one year and the annual mileage was 12,000 to 15,000 miles. Sent samples to Blackstone and everything was fine no problems at all. The only reason car was sold was 350,000 miles and everything around the motor and tranny was breaking. Bought a 2005 Lexus ES330 with 90,000 miles it has the 3MZ-FE motor and from a brief search oil sludge is not a problem for this motor but again this was a short search. Does anyone here do extended oil change intervals one year and or 12,000 to 15,000 miles on a ES330? What do you all think? Is this motor safe for extended oil change interval for average temperatures of 24 degrees Fahrenheit to 87 degrees Fahrenheit again average temperatures it might get to zero one to three times. Work is twenty five minutes away at about twelve to thirteen miles but it is taken out at least once a week for twenty to thirty miles one way. I average twelve to fifteen thousand a year. Have gotten into the habit of changing the oil in the middle of December and changing again next December. What do you all think please?

Thank You

If you think oil will be protecting your engine at 12K+ go for it. I personally would never go that long.

It may be safe and all the numbers could look good, but why push it? An extra oil change is $35 DIY or $60-100 at a shop. The filter life is usually the limiting factor with oil, in addition you may be developing dark staining/deposits throughout the engine internals from a longer OCI. You could also risk having extra moisture and fuel dilution from too many cold starts within 12 months. I used to think just like you when I started doing my own oil changes and sent samples out to Blackstone and read into oil reports, but later realized it's much easier to keep it simple and follow the book. Nowadays I stick with 5000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. As I mentioned before my average oil change is $35 in supplies and I actually enjoy looking over the car every 6 months to keep it in tip top shape. It gives me an excuse to check the brakes, rotate the tires, top off the washer fluid, check for leaks, etc.

I do Blackstone now for my LS and my GX and will do my ES at its next oil change. That being said, a jug of Mobil 1 High Mileage and a new OEM filter is so cheap, I still do my ES330 once a year as it doesn't get driven much. My LS and GX get a change every 4,000 miles with the same oil. While it would go longer, it's just so cheap to knock out a change with fresh oil.

Good luck.

I guess technically I have. I bought the car in 2019, did an oil change, (wasn't really necessary as the car lot did one, though) now coming up to 5,000 miles and I'm ready to change it, probably in the early spring. I run the OEM (?) filter that they sell at Walmart and M1. Car sees summer use only (so far) and isn't short tripped so I'm not worried about anything. Come to think of it, I've always change oil in everything at 5,000 miles regardless of time.

I wouldn't, and don't, go over 5,000 miles in anything, but that's just an opinion.

Hell, thinking back a bit, I was underneath another car doing an oil change just weeks after i broke my arm because it drove me crazy to go beyond 5,000 miles.

It’s a good idea to also replace every 6 months if you don’t drive a lot, because you may still be making a lot of short trips and cold starts causing the oil to get saturated with moisture and fuel.

Just my personal opinion. I never rely on those advertisements from oil companies. Every engine is different especially at higher mileage frequent oil changes will not only keep the engine clean but also will extend the life. I will go for a 5 to 6 K miles oil change interval. As I am a DIY person so does not cost much when I am doing it myself. Walmart has super cheap and good quality synthetic oil which I use for my ES.
