Purchased a 2002 Lexus ES3000 few months back and noticed the pervious owner had the winged type oil drain plug on the oil pan. So I guess the threads were stripped. Have anyone has experienced with the ego plug plug? Does it really work? I don't like winged oil drain plug, and look for alternative without replacing the oil pan.

First of all, you actually need to make sure the threads are stripped, sometimes it is the bolt that strips, and the oil pan remains relatively intact, though it may require some finesse and a run with a tap, which are not that expensive. It's an M12x1.25 thread.

It all depends on how much are you willing to invest in the repair. The most obvious solution, and probably the cheapest would be to replace the oil pan, since that engine is really common, it won't bean issue to find a pan for one, whether it is used or new.

If you don't want to get a whole pan, then there are thread repair kits available for sale, but they would run you about the same and the whole new pan and it will require drilling, so some metal filings will end up in the engine oil.

I heard eco plug works great on steel oil pan, I'll try that first. If it leaks oil, then I'll replace the pan. Thanks,
