Filler neck rusted? Tank itself rusty? Rusted lines? Need more info about your car like mileage and general condition.

Any Check Engine Lights?
Do you top off during fill-ups?
Is it during the fill-up or after it that you smell gas?
If you top off, it is better to avoid doing so, since it can flood the charcoal canister, which is responsible for containing gas fumes and not releasing them to the atmosphere. Flooding the canister will quickly ruin it, and the replacement is quite expensive.
How quickly after the fill-up the gas smell dissipates? If you can't really smell the gas a few minutes after, then it is probably fine. If you can, try localizing the area that the smell is coming from. Also, check the rubber gasket on the gas cap, those are common to dry out at that age.
Hope this helps and best of luck!
