1998 ES300 Brake Caliper replacement
After snapping the caliper slide pin inside one of the original rear calipers today, and not being able to free the small slider on the other rear caliper, I got stuck in a jam and needed to figure out what to do.
I priced two new rears out from Lexus/Toyota and the best I could find was $225 a piece. Rebuilt aftermarket’s were $65.00 a piece after the cores were returned. I usually always use Toyota parts but I couldn’t wait today and I needed the calipers to get the car back together.
I find a parts store 15 miles away that could get them and picked them up. I believe they were A-1/Cardone remans. I get back to the garage and go to install them and instantly got annoyed. Not only are they two different colors, but the hardware is noticeably cheaper, AND the threads and heads are US and not Metric. This really f$cokes me because I drove a metric bolt into the new pad carrier and basically striped/ruined it.
Shame on me for not using Toyota parts because that’s what gotten the car to last this long. 250k miles on the original calipers and I’m kicking myself for not just getting the OEM ones to replace these.

Cardone ranges from okay to complete trash I avoid everything they make. These are good value, have a set they work great. And nicely painted

Of course can't go wrong with OEM but that price is a bit much especially considering the above are reman OEM, as is Centric and a few other brands. I used to rebuild my own but given the time to media blast, replace parts, paint etc. it's usually better to buy some remans instead.
