Angry Trunk lid tail lights and backup lights not working

I have a 2005 ES330. I noticed that my trunk lid tail lights and backup lights are not working. I have tested with my meter and found:
1. Tail lights on, switch on, shifter in reverse. Reverse indicator light is on. The trunk lid tail lights and backup lights are not on.
2. I removed the trunk lid cover and removed the bulbs and checked them. They are good. Checked the backup fuse and it is good.
3. Here is where things get crazy. If I unplug both light bulb pigtails and check the plug, I have power on the hot side of the plug on both sides. I checked the grounding on both sides and it is good.
4. If I plug in either of light bulb pigtails the power goes away. I thought bad light bulb pigtail right, wrong both pigtails ohm out no short. I took a pigtail out of my 2002 ES300 to test and same result.

Any ideas? This is just plain weird.

Thanks, Jerry

Test meter will not be accurate it does not load the circuit enough, use a test light. Common failure points here are the lamp out warning box (blue, LH side trunk) or broken wires where they bend near the hinge.
