Default Argh! - Rear ABS Sensor Failure

Hardly got done with the test drive/victory lap after doing the CV Boots and the "Brake" and "ABS" lights arrive. My crappy Innova tool tells me it is the rear left and sure enough I pull the wheel, touch the wire and it is off. It took me a bit of work with silicone and a compressed air can but eventually the connector came of the stub end from the hub (below).

I ordered a new NSK hub, could not live with nearly $500 for the Lexus and figure NSK is a bit better than unknown brands and relabeled who ever's.

Now, to the question: I have the four mounting bolts loose. How in heaven's name does the hub get separated from the backing plate. I looked at some Youtube's - one devised a clever press through one of the stud holes, but he lacked a parking braking to maneuver around. Another used a BFH on the back of the bearing. I tried a couple of whacks to no avail and resorted to writing here for ideas. Every crease is now soaking in PB Blaster.

Back side of connector.

Hello,

Back side of the connector? The connector for the rear sensors is located under the back of a rear seat, the wire goes through the grommet into the interior. It is quite difficult to see what the piece in the picture is unfortunately..

Is the rear bearing bad as well, or you are just trying to get access to the sensor? The hub and bearing assembly is only held up by those 4 bolts, there isn't much that can wedge it in with rust, they usually simply come out, and there is no access to it from the back, at least as far as I am aware, a picture of the hub in question will be helpful. While you can rent a slide hammer at any parts store for free, this style of bearing shouldn't require one.. Try lightly tapping each edge of the hub to see if that will help.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Put the tire back on and lower the car (not completely off the jack) that usually does it. I had one that was rusted on so severely it took massive hits with a sledge before finally braking loose.

Arsenii/LeX2K,

I am optimistic the wire into the car is fine. The bit of plastic is what extends out from the back of the hub to the car connector. The 4 14mm bolts fixing the hub/backing plat to the car are free. The backing plate and the hub appear rust fused together.

If I understand LeX2K correctly, what I am going to do is put all four of the 14mm bolts in, back them out perhaps an eighth of an inch, put the wheel on and lower the car on the jack to see if that frees the plate from the hub?

I am also looking at disassembling the parking brake (ugh!) to see if that creates a space for me to use a long bolt as a press. I detest working with drum brakes.

I loath drum brakes in all forms.

Yes all 4 bolts on but loose, use vehicle weight to try and break the hub free. Rock the vehicle around if necessary. To be clear the bolts should be close to bottomed out you don't want the hub and wheel/tire to move too much.

I experienced the same problem, using the method in the below link worked great.

Yes, I saw that post. It is on my list of things to try. Unfortunately, it features that disassemble the parking brake step......

With some maneuvering I was able to leave the parking brake assembly intact.

Well, the hub finally yielded to an air hammer and torch. I had to strip it all down and take it to a friend's shop. Parking brake was much less difficult than the last drum brake I did. It is all buttoned up, ABS/Brake light is out and now I hope for a break from this car for a while. I did rear pads and bleed the brake lines because what the hexx the garage was a mess anyway.
