Another idea that might be useful would be to tie the tilt to the parking assist. As you back up and get closer to objects, the mirrors would tilt accordingly.

I've found that the tilt-down is most helpful when parallel parking and backing up close to the curb. This should keep the scratches off the rims. For regular driving, there's really no need for it but I keep them in tilt anyway.

That sorta brings up an interesting thought--if one keeps the side mirrors in "tilt" mode (i.e., leaves the side mirror switch in either L or R position)...I wonder how long them side mirror motors will last if used w/ such frequency, vs. relatively minimal usage of the reverse tilt feature?

Every electromechanical component has its FIT (failure in time) rate. Only Lexus engineers know that number. Unless, we take the motor out and inquire directly from its manufacturer

The first time i test drove the ES, the steering wheel comes down into position when I start the car. The first thought was: "hmmm i wonder how long would it take before that motor goes out". But I guess since it makes more room for driver to enter/exit the car, it's all good. Too much stuff to worry about as is....dont need to worry about that. hahah.
