Avalon & Camry are rated at 268 hp on regular unleaded and the ES 350 is rated at 272 on premium unleaded. So there shouldn't be too much of a drop off in performance. In my area of IL premium unleaded is 91 octane, regular is 87 and mid-range in 89.

my coworker said that one time she accidentally put 87 octane gas into her Lexus RX300 and it destroyed her engine... she said she needed to replace whole engine because of that one time. Is she full of ******?

No, she put diesel fuel, or kerosene in the engine & had to have the fuel system rebuilt. LoL!
The question between octane isn't the power. The question is the engine knocking that will happen at the high compression ratios.
Knock sensors are not used actively. They're used passively. When engine knock is present, the engine cycles back down afew * at a time until knock is not present. It waits X amount of rotations, then adds afew * of timing back into it until:
A) the timing is where it is programed to be to begin with
B) knock re-appears before the programmed timing point, and the cycle repeates
Knocking is very bad for an engine. Even light knocking over long periods of time. It wears literally every part in the bottom end of the engine.

So the debate continues....
I've used 87 octane gas in my ES350 for the last 2,000 miles and haven't noticed any difference in engine noise, performance, or gas mileage. Definitely no knocking.
As for that woman who's claim that the wrong gas ruined her engine, yes, she's full of it. Bad gas, maybe. But 87, 89, or 92 is all safe to run in your ES350.
