I hope the extra noise doesn't account for the extra 4 hp.
If so, then take away the 4hp and gimme a quieter car!

Great, this thread has been brought back to life. Just when things were looking brighter on the forum.

The poster might want to consider placing the infomation on the IS forum. I don't know if the IS250 had reports of noisy engines but more IS owners would see it over there.

I have a 2007 ES and have had the noise nearly since it was brand new. It has gotten louder now at 22K miles and I can now hear it after the engine is totally warmed up although fainter than the distinct noise when cold. It sounds like a lifter. It's damn embarassing and aggravating but all I get back from Lexus is that it's nothing out of the ordinary. I've had loaners from the dealer that did not have the noise. They said it's on my service record now so I shouldn't worry about it. I wonder if they'll recall that service record if the engine goes to hell after expiration of the warranty. My bottom line is I'm sorry I bought the car. Surprising to say that about a Lexus, but they've lost some ground. I believe Buick beat them out in reliabilty.

Mine sounds just a little lesss noisy / oil is Mobil 1. I have the service order from 3,000 miles in 2006 that has my complaint notated and the solution (direct fuel injector noise). I have been getting the oil / filter changed way better than specifcation calls for (mine is more time than miles). I too experienced no noise from the RX350s I have had as loaners.

I just bought the 6 year/100K extended warranty for piece of mind. I can transfer it to the new owner when I sell it.

Are those paint chips on the hood? Not very Lexus like if it is. How well has this car been maintained? It sounds like there is some engine problems. This one should go back to the dealer. My ES is whisper quiet, but I don't drive it hard like a sports car and I use premium fuel. I'm not sure if this is a concern but anywho I would have the dealer check out the engine.

I've read reports on this blog that said the dealers explained that the noise is caused by a switch to a timing chain, fuel injectors, and now I'm going to add a new one. My dealer told me that the piston tops are on a slant rather than a flat 90 degrees. Due to this, I'll experience some piston slap until the engine warms up!!!!!!!!!! Can you believe this? Even if this preposterous story were true, piston slap in a Lexus engine? What a bunch of BS. I'm going upstairs with this one. It's very embarassing to have a Lexus that sounds like a '54 Chevy that's low on oil.

Let me know what you find out, I was just thinking (this morning) about how the cooler weather will be setting in soon and the knock will be back. It only happens in cold weather on cold engines.

Toyota corporate 310-468-4000 as well as Lexus area office (Western 949-727-1977, Central 630-505-0535, Eastern 973-884-1011, Southern 770-777-9770). When contacting Lexus area office ask to speak with District operations manager for that area. DO NOT waste your time with 800-25-LEXUS as you will not get anywhere.

I spoke to a rep in lexus customer satisfaction today as a result of a letter I wrote to the head of Toyota North America. It took them a month and a half to repond to the letter to Toyota and over three months to reply to my call to customer satisfaction originally (80025LEXUS). Great response to their customers. Anyhow, it was all a waste of time as I expected it to be. Their position is that there is nothing abnormal about the engine noise. They have no explanation why other ES350s don't have this engine noise. They have no comment about the different stories their dealers are telling their customers i.e. timing chain, injectors, piston slap etc. They obviously believe that a Lexus engine that sounds like it has a lifter problem is normal. This is the last Lexus I'll buy.

My wife's RX has a cold engine rapping or knocking sound till the engine warms up.Sounds terrible.Just started happening this winter with about 18K miles on it.I tried synthetic oil and the noise was worse.Went back to dino oil. Then took it to the dealer and was told the noise is normal.
Fortunately her RX is leased so the noise doesn't bother me much.If it was my ES which isn't leased,I'd be pissed.
