Here is what I am doing to get my FREE version 7 (or newer) disk when it comes out.

Currently, all ES350's with version 5 are under a TSIB, because there are times your map shows false information due to errors. Instead of rushing to the dealer to get version 6, I will wait it out until some newer upgrades come out. TSIB is good for 4 years/50K miles. I am well under that.

I already brought my car in to have them update the software because of this false information, but I was told that this upgrade does NOT have anything to do with the new version mapping. All it did was correct the indications of my car on the NAV map.

Alan, here is the TSIB. It states to order a new disk and destroy the old one.

I was looking at my repair invoice, and it states that they ordered a CD disc for the TSIB upgrade. Here is what it says, "C/ states navigation gives wrong directions". When I asked my service advisor if this disc upgrades the mapping, he told me NO, all it does is upgrade the software so it reads correctly on the screen, but the mapping remains the same as the previous disc that was removed. Am I missing something?

MD350,

We know that Ver 6 can be burned with a load file from Ver 5 so the NAV system is usable when the car is moving but can the Ver 7 ??? I wonder!

I raise the question because having the ability for my wife to enter a new destination while I am driving the car is VERY important to me.

To me it's so important that I wouldn't upgrade if I lost this ability.

That is a good point. I still have the original disk, will have to weigh my options if and when I decide to get a new disk.

Maybe your issue had nothing to do with the TSIB. Below are issues I am having:

1) I live on the 700 block of my street. When home, it says I am on the 600 block. The street number is always wrong no matter where I am at.
2) Everything seems to be off by about a block or so.
3) Also, it says I arrived at my destination about 1 block too early. However, it has always given me overall correct directions (within a block)

I assume this is a disk issue?

All I know is ever since the upgrade, the NAV unit is as accurate as I can expect. The announcement, "You have arrived at your destination, your route guidance is now off" happens exactly at the front entrance to my house. I don't think it was this accurate before the upgrade.

$260 for the upgrade to Ver 7.01 is a rip off. Lexus takes us all to the cleaners for upgrades and parts. You can buy a portable GPS for that money with upgrades available online. I hope somebody finds a way to duplicate these discs and charge a reasonable price.

Man, isn't there someone out there who has access to a bunch of them to resell on Ebay or something? I say that because I don't have to fret about having to pay (near)-full price for map update discs for the nav in my GMC Yukon Denali--matter-of-fact, I just recently bought the latest version for my GMC nav for less than half of retail/list ($80 for what normally retails for around $170 at the dealership)...and no, it wasn't a burned copy--it was a brand-new, sealed map disc. I've bought my last two map updates for my GMC on Ebay...

Question Nav map update

I just received a note from Lexus that there is a new map update available but it does not say what version. My 07 ES is less than a year old. Is there a way to tell what version I have and what is the version they are hawking?

Also it says $265 MSRP (labor not included) Can I install a newer version myself?

If you press the MENU button and then the Map DVD soft button the current version installed will display.

Yes, you can swap out the DVD yourself. Use your fingernails to push up and remove the gray plastic Lexus panel at the bottom of the NAV screen. From the same screen that displayed the Map DVD version, press the eject soft button. This will eject the NAV DVD. Just put in the new one and snap the plastic cover back in place and you're in business.

I'm sorry but you cannot buy an aftermarket worth a crap for that money, the ones I've seen I'd settle for were about $600 or so discounted. I just looked at about 20 plus models at the midwest's greatest electronics store ABT. Plus the screen are about 1/2 the size and in most cases you don't want to leave them in the car so you have to have some sort of mounting system and take them in and out. The more expensive systems are functionally superior and other than not being built in, or big enough for us old guys to read, are just terrific!

My 03 GS 430 has no problems, no streets missing that are an issue, etc., so the new upgrade isn't a slam dunk for me even though the price is not an issue. If they updated to a 3/4 view, that would really be sweet, but I have not seen anyone actually provide much info on the changes to my era car with the upgrade.

That being said all you say about the pricing for parts and service is the only thing agreed to across the board on this Forum. But you know that going in and mitigate as you can. The great thing about this board is that you have people that love the challege of being told they can't do something......
