Default Adjusting Sensitivity of Air Intake?

So, I understand the procedure shown on page 165 of my owner's manual. What I don't understand is what it means.

If I adjust it from 0 to -3 (low) what is the effect? Or to +3 (high)?

I'm assuming it has something to do how quickly it moves from Recircluate to Fresh under some condition. Anyone care to elaborate?

I think you are looking at the smog sensor sensitivity setting, (tongue twister). When the fresh/recirc button is set to auto, it will cycle to keep noxious odors (e.g., diesel pickups) from gagging you. If you hold the fresh/recirc button for a few seconds with the climate system on, it will bring up the menu you seem to be describing. It must be re-selected to auto after the ignition is powered down, each time.
