I had to have that done to my car, and it worked out very well. The dealer did a clean job. However, I am upset that it had to be done in the first place. But, happy that something was able to get fixed!

I had that also. I noticed that most times it occured, I was on a sloped driveway just outside my garage. I was able to reproduce it this way:

1. back out of garage
2. stop on the sloped driveway, keep brake pedal applied, shift to P
(I do this often because my family would get in the car at this time)
3. shift to R again, foot still on brake pedal, then I get the loud bang

If, between 2 and 3, I let go of the brake pedal, then I don't get the bang when I shift to R.

This is a normal occurence. The banging sound you're hearing is the transmission pawl releasing. When the weight of the car is on a sloped driveway it causes a large stress on the release mechanism, thus the banging sound. This would not happen if the car was on a level road.

Agree!! To avoid this, set the parking brake before letting off the brake pedal. This way, the weight of the car rests on the parking brake and not the tranny.
