5W-20 instead of 5W-30 motor oil?
Anyone using (or contemplating the use of) 5W-20 instead of 5W-30 motor oil in their ES 350? Just curious, because I came across a Toyota TSB that basically states that Toyota is now recommending either 5W-20 or 0W-20 (depending on engine) as factory fill for all Toyota and Scion engines (see TSB sticky in this forum for details--I attached a PDF of the TSB to my post in that thread). Yes, I know it's a "Toyota" TSB and not a "Lexus" TSB, but given that most--if not all--of the engines in the Lexus line of passenger motor vehicles pretty much come from the same engine series that are used in Toyota motor vehicles...I can't see why this TSB can't be applied to Lexus vehicles whose engines are among the engine series listed in the Toyota motor oil TSB--of which the ES 350 GR-series engine is among those listed...after all, it's not as if the 2GR-FE engine found in the ES 350 is mechanically and functionally different from the 2GR-FE engine used in the V6 Camry...

The ES has the same engine as Camry, Avalon, RAV4, Highlander and Sienna.

I dont have an ES, but for my 1uz-fe (GS400), I went ahead with 5w-20 from 5w-30. I've been doing this before Toyota even released the TSB. No negative effect for me. Most engines are practically carry-overs anyways. It's just more efficient to run on 5w-20 than 5w-30 if the engine can tolerate it.

The number represents its flow ability. The higher the number to thicker the oil. The 1st number is how the oil is a cold temps(5W winter).
The 2nd number is when hot. At least this is what I have been led to believe the last 40 years.

going with the 5/20 or 0/20 should not damage the engine, probably more of a mental mind game, on the oil forum someone ran 5/20 Mobil 1 in the 4.7L 1st gen tundra and the UOA came back fine, the main concern was increased engine wear but nothing unusual showed up

Even if the ES350 engine was a FSE instead of an FE--it doesn't really matter as far as the gist of this thread is concerned, as both engines are members of the GR engine family.
