Default When to swich to synthetic

I have read a wide variety of opinions on when its best to switch to synthetic. I would prefer to do during my first oil change at 5K. Is there any reason not to do it this early? Can it be harmfull to engine as it may not have broken in enough at this point?

5K is usually when my uncle and I do it on vehicles, generally the first oil change, so you are right on track there. No harm there.

I changed to Pennzoil Platinum(synthetic) in my dads ES350 at 1000 miles. Car has over 10,000 miles now with no leaks. Checked compression and all are within spec. New cars, you dont need to worry about when to change to synthetic fluids.

I would wait until the 5,000 mile service to make the switch to let the engine break in as recomended.

I agree. I would wait till the 5,000 mile mark. Anytime after that you should be good to go.

I would imagine you would read a million different opinions on this though.

I've read on other sites that you shouldn't do it too late. Like if you've got 60,000 miles, the engine tolerances get set for dino oil and leaks or something bad happen if you switch to synthetic. I can't remember the details anymore but just remember the message of "if you switch, do it fairly early." First oil change at 5000 sounds good.

Why switch in the first place? Petroleum based oils are recommended by Lexus. They would not do this if they (automotive and lubrication engineers) thought petroleum oils were detrimental to the operation of the engine. Frequency of oil changes is a much larger factor in engine performance and longevity than more expensive and suposedly superior engine oils. If you want to spend the extra dollars, spend it on more frequent oil and filter changes that meet the manufacturer's recommendations. I worked for a multinational oil company who sold both types of automotive engine oils, so hopefully I should know. Hope this helps.

So why do so many people here insist on using synthetic?

Makes em feel better. Doesn't hurt. Peace of mind might be worth the money to some people.

Also, you don't have to change as often with synthetic. The time might be worth more than the money.

I just had my free 5,000 mile oil change done at the dealer. I'll probably switch to Mobil 1 for my next service. The synthetic does makes me feel better when I wait a little longer than recommended.

While synthetic oils and their additive packages may last longer than petroleum based oils, they are no different in their capabilities to prevent the accumolation of abrasive particulates in crankcase oils as a result of ingestion, carbon from combustion and metal wear. The only sure method of protecting engines from these detrimental abrasives is to drain the oil. Ergo, more frequent oil/filter changes equal less particulates in engine equal less wear, friction, heat equals smoother running engine and longevity. Hopes this helps.

I just did my 20,000 service OUTSIDE the dealership because they charge way too much for an oil change + "other services". For $180, the package includes an inspection, tire rotate, and wash. I don't think it's a good deal, so I went to EZ Lube, which is a reputable chain in California. They recommend that newer Lexus vehicles use synthetic. So I said okay lets try it. It costs $80 total, and lemme say....I am sticking with synthetic from now on. The cold light knocking sound is completely gone. The car runs soooooo much smoother and engine is noticibly quieter. I think it's a good switch.

I don't keep my cars past 50K miles. Regular oil will do just fine for me. And, I get them done at the local Toyota dealer for $20.
