Lexus introduces Pebble Beach Edition of the ES350 at the '08 Chicago Auto Show
#31
Perhaps, but seeing how the ES is essentially a more-luxurious Camry...yet the Camry can be had in an "SE" trim that includes lower front/rear/side skirts and offers a slightly-stiffer suspension (vs. LE)...and that no one would ever confuse a Camry's performance to that of an IS or GS nor view a Camry as a sports-oriented sedan...I can't see why it wouldn't make any sense to give the ES a slightly-sportier appearance/performance if one desires. Heck--the low-profile factory rear spoiler would technically be considered more of a sport-oriented accessory item rather than a luxury-based accessory item, yet it can be had on the ES...neverminding the fact that it probably serves no practical functional purpose. IOW--one could argue that the rear spoiler serves no functional purpose being on an ES, yet it is available as a factory option.
Toyota didn't make another model in the exact same price range as the Camry that's clearly biased towards sport. They did with the ES. Making the ES too sporty cannibilizes sales from the IS. They made a point not to copy the others by trying to make one car fit all. Their strategy was to go all out in either direction.
Spoiler and some rims are easy crap a dealer can throw on. Fairly subtle to with no pretense towards actual performance. Stuff is just visual fluff. Springs gets technical and does get into actual sporty performance. It's not like the spoiler does anything or the rims are lighter weight or bigger in size. It's just appearance.
