Default Broken part of oil filter case.

I changed my oil filter today for the first time. The Lexus dealer changed it the first 2 times. When I removed the plug in the bottom of the filter I noticed that a chunk was missing from the ring inside the bottom.(see picture) . I don’t know if they broke it the first or second time they changed the oil. I can’t prove that they broke it. I am going to discuss it with the dealer. I would never had known it was broken if I hadn’t decided to change the oil myself. This is the first car that I have ever let anyone change my oil. This is one of the reasons I do everything myself if I can.

hm... see if you can do anything about it when you take it in next time.. if not.. find a friend who owns a lexus.. make him/her go to the dealership for an oil change or what not... and make sure he/she gets an ES350 loaner car...and take it from the loaner car... =P.... the dealership will never know.....

If you look at the picture there is a ring in the center. The ring is broken at the 6 oclock position. Refer to this link( http://members.***.net/n0v8or/avalon_oil_change.pdf) for a picture and how to change the filter. Anyway the dealer agreed to replace it.

Moot point, given that the dealer agreed to replace it...but--sure it would be hard to prove that the dealer broke it...but at the same time it would be hard for them to prove that you broke it...thus you might be able to argue that if neither side claims to have broken it, then it must be a manufacturer defect subject to replacement at no cost to you (if still under warranty)...not unless the dealer tries to claim that the ring is not really broken but in reality, a notch that was engineered into the ring.
