I noticed last night when using my wife's fob that when I climbed in the car before starting the key fob light flashes. Once the car is started it stops. Is there a reason for this or is it just to acknowledge it has linked with the car and viceversa?

Yes, mine blinks too. I believe you are correct, it is communicating with the car.

The fob has a radio receiver and transmitter in it. The car has transmitters located by the door handles, trunk, ignition button, etc. Whenever the fob gets a signal from the car, it sends back a reply, enabling the car to know where you are and illuminate various lights (e.g., outside mirror lamps, dome lamp), enable unlocking of doors, etc. The lamp on the fob blinks to let you know a transmission is occurring. It's normal.
