I have 32K on my May 06 ES-350. Presently have Michelins.
Need new tires soon. Would like to know what to do about tires from local tire dealer. Do they know enough about Tire Pressure transmitters, etc. Do I have to go to Lexus Dealer for proper installation.![Confused](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Also; where are they located??? Tire or rim..........

What kind of tire are you thinking of getting? I have the Michelins and have been satisfied with them.

Yes, they are in the tire as part of the tire valve. I think all but the smallest of tire shops have seen enough TPMS cars to know how to handle them. Discount tire charges $5 per tire with each repair or install for a valve rebuild which they say is mandated by "lexus". A little irritating with each free flat repair but maybe a good idea on tire replacement at 32+K.

Sorry - I may not have stated that correctly. The TPMS sensor/transmitter in your Lexus is "inside of" rather than "in" the tire (a nail would be "in" your tire) and is neither part of the tire nor the wheel but is a separate part - the tire valve assembly. The tire valve used to be an inexpensive usually mostly rubber part but is now a very costly metal, plastic and rubber part.

However, you don't necessarily have to go with this solution with your aftermarket tires/rims. You can get rims with the TPMS sensor/transmitter mounted on a band around the rim. I actually think this is a better solution. You're more likely to change your tires than your rims so every time you do this you'll have to move the TPMS sensors. Also, you don't have to worry about the valve hole being large enough to accommodate the TPMS sensor/valve assembly.
There's sticky in the tires/wheels forum that is a good source of information.

Now for a question of my own and hopefully it is relevant to this thread and the answer useful to the OP. I have a set of old rims/snow tires from my old Maxima. The tires are shot but I would like to re-use the rims. Trouble is the rims don't have TPMS. Does anyone know if they can retro-fitted?

Assuming the tires are the size you need I believe you can move your TPMS sensors to the new wheels or buy two new ones (expensive) for your winter tires. I think the tire valve hole in all tires is the same.

I'm afraid I can't get past a lifetime of referring to the whole thing as the "tire". My kids have been on me for years about calling a wheel a "wheel" rather than a "rim". Sorry.

I figured that was what you really meant to say, but I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt in case there was some newfangled tire technology that just came out and I just didn't read about it...
