Why does the Avalon get better mpg than the ES?
Why does the Avalon get better mpg than the ES 330/350?
I don't understand why this has been pretty consistent over the past number of years too.
The HP is pretty close to the same, but the ES is smaller and runs premium both should favor it over the Avalon. Can someone please explain this to me I think it is a pretty legit question.
I've never owned a Toyota/Lexus before. I'm a german car buff but there's something about a Lexus I really like. Except the tri-spoke steering wheel. I think it's complete trash on a luxury car, which is why I like the Avalon. You should be able to rest your hand when cruising on the bottom of your wheel if you ask me. So I'm sure I'll have some follow up questions for you guys.

Good question. Maybe someone has an answer. You might ask over on the ES350 forum as I'm sure Avalon and ES350 were cross shopped by a lot of owners.
Might be gearing. Both have 6 speed automatics but I don't know if the gearing is different. Both can be had with similar ammenities so the weight of both should be close.
Beginning with the 2011 model year, regular unleaded is now recommended for the ES350.

Both the Avalon and ES are end of life, so if you're considering buying one or the other, I'd recommend waiting a year or so. We should be seeing signs of the next ES in about 6 months.

Also no I am not looking at buying new, The 07's got the added gear to the tranny but regardless they still get less mpg. Does not make sense at all why to me.
Also does a RX have to run on premium or can it run just fine on regular?
Side note but how much is a camry XLE lacking compared to a ES?

ES is quieter, better built and more refined than Camry XLE but I would recommend driving both and forming your own conclusion. Mileage discrepancies are probably due to gearing assuming weight is similar. A luxury car like the ES will probably be geared to deliver better performance but if you drive gently (i.e. keep RPMs low) you should get comparable mileage with both.

I assume the mileage differences you are looking at are EPA estimates.
Having owned both a 2006 Avalon and a 2010 ES350 I can tell you that I'm averaging 1-2mpg better with the ES350 that I did with the Avalon. I averaged right around 28mpg with the Avalon and between 29-31mpg with the ES350.
If I had my druthers I would have purchased another Avalon, but since it was for my wife, we settled on the ES350. I enjoy a bigger cabin and she enjoys the smaller feeling of the ES350. While both vehicles are very quiet inside, I thought the Avalon had a slightly better ride.

My '07 Ultra, with 4 adults, 5 cats (in their respective pet taxis) and a full trunk would get about a tick over 30 mpg in the interstate drive from Wilkes Barre, PA to Cleveland using 91+ octane fuel, averaging 75 mph or so with 40,000+ mile on the car. I would fill up the tank until it almost spilled out before and after the drive to gauge the real numbers. This was in the good weather months, ac running etc. The 2011, with about 700 miles on it, is averaging 23-24 mpg around suburbia right now.

Also I am looking at previous years as well for these comparisons.

If I'm looking at the EPA right, its a 1 MPG difference.
20 vs 19 city
29 vs 27 highway
That is really impressive for the Avalon on the highway.
I've driven the ES 350 on an extensive road trip this year and I was at 28/29...very impressive.
