We bought our ES350 used a number of years ago. When we changed the battery, the Nav system no longer worked and a " A program cannot be read. Please consult to a dealer." msg appeared (bad english and everthing). Am I wrong to assume that the loss of power from the battery swap caused the software to dump from the system and there was no disc installed to "reboot" the system? Continuing that train of thought.....all I need is a disc and the system will restore? If so will an "update" disc work or do I need an original "program" disc?

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that there must be a disc in it at all times to work. Not must initially. So I would try ejecting the disc and putting it back in.
