Default heat shield necessary?

The 2 aluminum heat shields between the end of the each exhaust system and the spare wheel well compartment have come rusted from their bolts. Can I just remove these without ill effect? They are not even listed in the service manual. The dealer says they are $100 each with a couple of hours labor...

I don't know for certain about ES350 but I had a Nissan Maxima that had the same problem. The dealer just removed the shield and said it wasn't necessary.

I also had the same thing done to a Dodge Shadow I owned ages ago.

Neither car suffered any problems.

You should just ask yourself the question "why did they put them on if you don't need them. " Go from there and proceed at your own risk.

They are suposed to be there, don't drive without them. Find 2 used heat shields and replace them.
