Default Battery wouldn't start ...

  • My 17 month old Battery needed jumping today. Could this be a one time thing?
  • It's under a 2 year Warranty so free replacement.
  • I will bring to dealership if the next time i use it, it doesn't start again.
  • Just might be one time thing. To be determined.

Take it to one of the big auto parts stores and have it checked. Even though they offer to do it free I always find something to buy while there. Just makes me feel better. I myself would not go the wait and see route. I'm not a big fan of surprises.

Also the alternator could potentially be fried; mine went around the 100k mark ('08). Was lucky enough that the last bit of juice in the battery got me into my garage. Charged the battery, took it to a local shop <1 mile away from my house (not a dealership) and got a new alternator for around $800 installed. Book time is 5 hours I believe on the alternator due to the fun in getting it out, so I let them handle that fun.

Hopefully, it was a bad battery but do check the alternator as mlacomb suggests. The Oreillys and AZ shops will test for free with the vehicle running. Ours went out at 155K; we had a bigger problem, the decoupler pulley seized and the heat buildup fried the alternator - should have seen the white smoke coming out of the engine bay from the belt - thought she was going to blow up!. Paid about $150 at Oreillys for a lifetime warranty alternator. At about 175K the voltage regulator went bad and they gave me a new one. As stated above they are a PIA to replace. I can now do it in about 3 hours. I bought a plug in voltage meter for the cig lighter so the wife can monitor the charging system; it should read 12.5 volts before startup, and 13.5-14.5 with engine idling. Ours purrs at 14.1 volts. It's how she caught the alt going bad the second time - it was putting out 12 volts at idle, indicating the alternator was not charging. That was one of the best $10 investments I made for the car.
