The purpose of manual shifting is to either keep the engine in the RPM range
that lets it make the best power or to let the engine better control the car speed
to save the brakes from overheating.

The time and place to do this is pretty much nonexistent in routine commuting
but when you are driving in the mountains you will see signs "Trucks use lower
gears". A long downgrade and a heavy vehicle would put a lot of heat into
friction brakes if you simply rode the brake pedal all the way down. Now would
be the time to slide the Lexus shifter to the left and pull back, watch the display
by the speedometer change from "D" Drive to "S" Sport (or "M" Manual) and
now you will see an actual gear number such as 4 or 3. This will cause the
engine to speed up and the car to slow down.

The other opportunity to use the Sport Shifting is when you are trying to be
well...sporty. To select a gear makes the cars speed more closely match
the engine speed. In theory it allows higher speeds because you are once
again using the brakes less.

If you are going to race anyone then don't use automatic. Put it on manual/S and then shift to next gear just before hitting the red line.
You will be surprised with the torque/power as opposed to automatic.

I haven't pushed LS like that but have pushed Jaguar F-Type in mountains and experience is exhilarating.

My Dad was fond of telling me that the brake linings are inexpensive and motor and transmission pieces are not...
"Why are you using the down shift just to slow the car, that is what brakes are for!"
Regardless it is fun to control the speed with one pedal - floored and lifted rather than two, slow and slower!

Sport mode shifting give more control when on curves keeping the revs higher then accelerating out of the corner gives a great feeling of sport driving it can also be used in slick conditions to better keep control

Watch the tach when you shift.
