Default Oil Light

Any one deal with the engine oil light on? We sold our ES350 to daughter's BF about 3 weeks ago. Yesterday, oil light came one right after he left our house. Oil level was about a third of a quart low. Topped it off and no change - oil light flickering on and off. Tonight, we replaced the oil pressure sending unit; again, no change. Ordered an oil pressure test gauge and will check oil pressure when it arrives. Engine idles normally otherwise. I didn't test drive it but BF reports no abnormal engine noise (knocking, clapping etc...). Oil is getting to the top - from what I can see through the filler cap. It is time for an oil change - oil filter I put in is a Baldwin filter - first time I had used it. Guess it's worth replacing it just in case ... Open to suggestions ... Engine has 220K and doesn't burn much oil - maybe half a quart at 10K. From I've researched, replacing the oil pump is quite a chore and may not be worth the labor. What is normal oil pressure by the way? On a Sienna site, I see oil pressure at idle should be 11.6+ psi; and 55+ psi at 3K rpm.

Edit - False alarm. It was the traction control light that came on. See Post #4.

It is strange that this just happened. Also the low oil pressure sensor usually trigger at around 5-8 psi so if you replaced yours and still get the light then the only way to see what you have is by checking it with a mechanical oil pressure gauge. Once you see the actual OP you can find out which way to go. Normal OP at 2K rpm would be around 35-40 psi. So there could be a problem with oil pump or pressure by pass or main bearings. Burning as little oil as you mention would only be worn rings or valve guides but this wouldn't affect pressure. Good luck.

the es350 pressure is

ENGINE CONDITION OIL PRESSURE
Idle 80 kPa (0.8 kgf*cm 2, 11.6 psi) or more
6,000 rpm 380 kPa (3.9 kgf*cm 2, 55.5 psi) or more

Thanks for reply. However, I'm embarrassed to say my daughter's BF may be a dimwit. It is actually the traction control light that came on. I should have sat in the car to see it for myself - I assumed he knew the difference. That's good news in a way. Question is what would cause only the traction control light to come on? I will check for a CEL code next time he comes over. Today he said the light went away when he did the clear-maintenance-light procedure. I think a code may still be stored in there.

The oil pressure switch is rather cheap. I'd just purchase one and install it hoping the sensor just went bad :

And my bad for not following through. It was a bad coil, #4, in the front; so, it was easy to replace. And the bad coil was an aftermarket AA Ignition coil, bought at amazon. Both AA Ignition coils I got have gone bad; one was within a year and the vendor ignored my warranty claim. I am now running Yec Flamma coils (IGC112F) and have not had any issues with them yet.

If the spark plugs in your cadillac are burnt up they will kill your ignition coils.

For the es, I'd suggest cleaning the throttle body, add fuel system cleaner, clean iacv, clean trans pan, change atf fluid, and change your oil using diesel oil (shell rotella) for one interval to clean out the crankcase.

Did new plugs when I did coils.
