VSC engine light, Trac Off - now what?
So I made sure the gas cap is tight. That didn't do the trick. Someone said to put vaseline on the thread of the cap so I tried that and didn't work. I put a new OEM gas cap on this morning, drove for about 15 miles and stopped off at a gas station to fill it up. It's still on.
What else can I try before taking it to the shop?

Read the codes.

I would reset it and wait.

You would need a code reader that has the erase function to delete the code. All auto parts store have them and maybe someone you know has one. Some auto parts stores will check and erase the codes for you but some won't. Find one and get it erased and see if it comes back. If so then you'll need more diagnostic investigations.

Try to reset it with a scanner, you can get one from Walmart for 40-50 bucks.
If it comes back then I will explain to you what to check.

So I bought the scanner and erased the code. A couple days later, VSC check engine light appeared again. So would my next step is to take it to the shop and get smoke-tested and get it fixed?

Check all the hoses. You have a leak somewhere.
