Accidentally used Regular Gas. Help.
#16
My wife and I struggled with the same dilemma and settled on the ES. We have saved a lot of $ over the course of 10 years of ownership. It's not that we couldn't afford the LS, we just thought the overall savings could be used in better ways.
I have only run premium gas in the ES occasionally, usually on road trips where the extra HP might come in handy passing semis on Interstate 5!

I think that's the real question about these cars. If the manufacturer is recommending premium, I don't care if it's going to give me a few extra horsepower. But if it's going to mess with my injectors or cause other failure issues prematurely that's what I want to know. In this whole thread I don't think I saw much serious comment about that. But I'd like to. I've been using the mid-grade fuel for 11 years on my '07 ES w no problem.
So on an ES, run regular its going to be just fine.
Now, an LS has a high pressure fuel system and direct injection, I would only run premium in an LS, and I do. But my 2003 and 2010 ES's I always ran regular, and I still have my 2003 ES with 210,000 miles and it runs great.

You are not doing anything except making the knock sensors do their job a little more than normal and loosing a tad of power and being more easily effected by environmental factors.
The car will adjust fine, long term wear if you constantly use 87 would really be the engine always low level knocking and adjusting down when trying to hit its target spark advance and can advance and being unable to due to fuel. It wants to hit primarily an emissions goal followed by performance if fuel allows, it will try and creep up to that goal and back off if it detects knock brought on by heat/fuel/load and creep back up to its goal once the knock stops. After a while the car will learn it's never getting 93 and mostly give up and the trims/spark map in long term data scanning will reflect as much.
If you constantly switch back and forth that's where it will always try and adjust back up since it doesn't have a consistent long term map.

There was a guest when I worked for a Chevrolet dealer that insisted it
must be uphill "all the way" to the Mississippi River from Chicago because
he always got 2 MPG better on his way "downhill" back to the city...
Turns out he was filling with 10% Ethanol Fuel (mandated in Chicago) for
the trip out and filling up with 100% gas for the trip home. E10 does reduce
your mileage but he was sure it was the elevation change!

Sounds like you haven't driven Interstate 5 on the west coast. The semi drivers get board and pass the time by f-ing with the cars. Believe me, you need every horse you can muster to stay alive!

If you are convinced in your mind that you can feel the difference then use premium gas. Whatever floats your boat.
