5th Gen ES Gas Mileage
My wife's 2011 ES gas mileage started out poor, compared to the EPA estimates, and went downhill from there. With around 75K on the odometer, it is currently getting about 18-19 mpg around town. Because we haven't taken it on a trip in a long time, I don't know the highway MPG. When it was newer, it would get 28-29 on the highway.
The combined (mixed) mileage is about 20 MPG, which is what the on-board computer shows as well. Tank mileage varies from 18 to 20 depending on the circumstances. Granted, I'm in CA where our fuel is formulated for keeping the air quality acceptable, not for maximum performance or mileage (also one of the reasons our fuel is more expensive than most states).
I'm curious as to what other 5-gen owners are getting in the MPG arena. Please respond with your city/highway MPG numbers, as I'm wondering if I need to get my ES into a shop where they can analyze the computer data and see if there is anything wrong. I've kept up on all the maintenance and only use the best fluids and parts. I know my wife drives relatively fast and tends to ride the brakes, but even when I'm driving the ES, it seems to be getting worse-than-expected mileage.
Thanks in advanced for your responses.

I just bought a 2010 ES with 99,000 miles and I am getting between 19-21 mpg mixed driving. I have a lot of hills in my area so I know my mileage is going to be not so great. I’ve only had it for a month so still getting used to it.

2011 with almost 120k. Filled up the tank last week with regular and drove about 35 miles (95% of it was highway). This was in the CA Bay Area with early morning temps. My computer was saying I was averaging 32 mpg on that "tank". Mixed driving it will drop to about 24-26. Not sure how accurate the computer is with mpg, but I'll take it. I replaced my spark plugs recently and have a high percentage of new transmission fluid by doing multiple drain and fills. About to drive from CA to MD, will be curious to see what kind of numbers I get.

Thanks for the response. You're getting a little bit better mileage than me.

This is mine since February in Northern NJ. Always filled up with regular. 73,000 miles. I've noticed the TANK AVG is about 1-2.5 MPG higher than the manually calculated MPG.

I'm guessing you might get around 19-20 mpg in city-only driving? I would expect you to be getting even better than 24-25 mpg combined, considering you drive 70% highway miles. After yours and the other responses I've gotten so far, I'm thinking my wife's ES might be "normal" considering her driving style. I mistakenly thought by 2011 that the EPA estimates were more realistic than prior to then. Maybe they are to some degree, however, they always give a disclaimer for EPA estimates which state the figures are for comparison only and your mileage may vary depending on driving style, terrain, fuel quality, etc.

Thanks, cool website Hayk. I did not know this existed. I used to keep a log book in my vehicles when we didn't have onboard computers to calculate tank and lifetime mileage. I still have to calculate mileage manually in my 2001 Tundra, but I simply write it at the top of each fill-up receipt. Talk about poor mileage, I get 12 mpg combined in the Tundra, but love it anyway!

You're within the norm, so nothing drastically bad. All you could really do is check the tire pressure, air filters, maybe clean the MAF and change the spark plugs.
