Power Steering Fluid Lexus ES350 2010
I recently went to Midas to have my Power Steering fluid flushed. First of all is this a good idea. I have 75,000 miles on it and I haven’t changed the Power steering fluid since I bought it used at 24000 miles. Second they used Dexron ll Power Steering fluid. Is this recommended for a Lexus ES 350 2010 vehicle?

Every time I change my oil, I use a turkey baster to empty the power steering fluid reservoir and fill it with Dexron II. Flushing is ideal, but difficult, so I wouldn't trust most shops with it. This is something I can do myself, the fluid is cheap if you buy it by the gallon on Amazon, it's easy, and over the life of the car, you'll be ensured your power steering fluid is in good shape.

First of all you have to remove the reservoir and clean it with brake cleaner. Then you have to put it back on, the return horse should go in another bottle and the outlet pipe on the reservoir have to be clogged up. Then you fill the reservoir with new oil and start the car for a second, add some oil in the reservoir, that's the only way to get all the oil from the system, new oil will push the old oil into the bottle, you have to do this at least five times. Then put everything back together and enjoy your noiseless power steering.

Your flushing procedure is great for a vehicle that has 75K+ miles without a power steering fluid change, but with regular changing, the reservoir won't have a build-up of debris/sludge that needs to be cleaned out. A regular drain-n-fill of the reservoir (only) with fresh fluid will prevent sludge build-up not only in the reservoir, but throughout the system as fresh detergent, antioxidants, corrosion inhibitors, anti-foam agents and demulsifying agents do their jobs.

I flushed my power steering fluid at 60k at lexus dealer for $120. Will do next one at 120k. Dont think you need to do it any more often than that. Owner manual does not even mention that it needs to be changed (just like famous life time ATF).

I'm not preaching my method because I believe it is better for the vehicle over any other. I'm sharing my method to show that one can keep their power steering system clean and well maintained without spending $120 at the dealer, or jump through hoops to do a home flush and fill. I simply do a reservoir refill at regular intervals instead. This is just one more idea I'm floating out there for thinking outside of the box. To each, his own.
