Default Gear Selector Fitment is Loose

2010 Lexus ES 350. I'm not sure if this is normal, the gloss black area with markings P N R D appears to be loose. It doesn't move about, but it flexes (slightly shifts) in the direction of gear selector's motion. The best way I can describe the feeling is as if the part is in a rubber housing and not clamped in place with screws or clips.

Here is a picture (not of my car) to help visualize what I'm on about:

Blue: Part of reference
Orange: Indicating motion of gear selector and gloss black part in the right hand direction
GREEN: Indicating motion of gear selector and gloss black part in the left hand direction

Please note: Only the gloss black bit moves, not the chrome surround, the wood trim or the center console area.

I will record the gear selector in motion soon.

Is this normal? If not, could it be a result if a loose clip or the fact it was taken apart at one point and not properly assembled?

It's bugging me to no end and I almost want to hold the gloss black part while shifting.

Noted, will do. I take it's not normal then? It has been this way since I owned the car (I'm the second owner) a couple of years ago.

Thank you for the link.
