Used Avalon vs. ES350 & RX350 for Daily Driver
Hey folks:
I drive about an hour each way to work and live near Toronto, so winter driving is definitely a factor. I'm down to these 3 models when it comes to my next vehicle purchase (whatever I choose will be roughly 10-12 years old, well-maintained and lower mileage). I was wondering anyone's thoughts on advantages/disadvantages between these 3 as a daily commuter vehicle with putting on roughly 30,000 miles a year.
Reliability, safety and comfort are my top priorities. The RX350 is one option since safety and winter driving are big for me (as well as potentially hitting a deer at night, which hopefully will never happen, touch wood), but I absolutely love the Avalon and ES350, so any thoughts/experiences are appreciated. I'm looking to keep the budget down as much as I can, but I'll pay a few thousand more for a vehicle that will last several years longer, obviously.
Thank you!
- Jeff

They're all very distinct cars, so you should be able to choose according to your priorities.
The RX350 has the advantage of being an SUV and easier to exit/enter. That's a significant factor in a daily driver. Plus the capability in snow.
The Avalon is beautiful and a great cruiser and it has plenty of room for people in back. But it's a sedan, and ducking down and climbing out gets annoying when you've had an SUV.
The ES350 is also beautiful, but more agile and sporty. But the interior feels cramped -- the A-pillar seems to slope a bit too close to the driver for my tastes. Plus it's a sedan, and entry and exit aren't as easy as an SUV.
Those are my thoughts: a car-like SUV, a smooth cruiser, or an agile sport sedan. Clearly the entry/exit thing and safer height of an SUV make it my recommendation. But you'll need to determine your own priorities.
Can't lose with any of them!

Get a RX350 based on winter driving, reliability, safety and comfort factors.
I happen to own 3 of them. All of them are safe, reliable, and comfortable to drive, but for winter driving near Toronto, Canada, get a RX350. If possible, get an AWD one.

I'll spend a bit more on gas and get an RX350. Thanks for your help!

I actually decided on a 5th gen. ES350 over the Avalon or RX. Less gas cost and the price for a lower-mileage one is about the same as an Avalon in my area, so I might as well go with the Lexus.
