Key Fob question- dealer or locksmith
Hello everyone, I recently purchased a 2010 ES 350. However, it only came with one key fob. I contacted a Lexus dealer and a locksmith to get quotes. However, the research I dug into on this brought me to an interesting dilemma.
A locksmith told me he can reprogram a new key fob but it would mean reprogramming my original key fob as well since the car would have a new code. Cost - about $250
Dealer (Lexus) told me they can just make a copy of the original key since I have it..., therefore nothing has to be reprogrammed.
Cost - about $500
Obviously the locksmith is cheaper, but I’m concerned about him having to reprogram everything. I’ve heard stories of people using a locksmith and then later having issues with their car after their keys were reprogrammed.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be the best way to go about this? Any feedback is welcomed. Thanks in advance for your input.

What I did cost a lot less than $500. I got blank keys from Ebay for about $10. each. Then I sent them to Rich in Parts Dept., Murray Lexus, 5686 S. State St., Murray, UT 84107 (801-264-3660). The cost was $48.36 for cutting two, tax and shipping. They fit like new and slid right into my OEM fobs.
They can also make original key fobs, Ask Rich for the options. My local Toyota dealer couldn't do anything.

Just order this online at Amazon, I had it programmed and running in under 10 minutes:
However, if you want the metal key copied as well, you may need to go to a specialty locksmith for that part. I was happy to have a second FOB for emergency use.
Regards,
Earl

I think by the time I get my NX, keys will come in suppository form.
But speaking of living with only one key for the medium term it seems, I'm of the impression that the digital key can perform everything a regular electronic key can. Is that the case? I get it that the d-key has some additional requirements (can't be used with a dead phone battery like an e-key can, requires a service subscription but most people get a free subscription to start with right?). But with the d-key you should still be good in most cases perhaps leaving the one good e-key home safe? Anyone routinely using it?
I've heard that new e-keys can only be programmed if an existing key is available, but if Lexus can assign d-keys easily enough, if the primary key is lost it should still be possible to program new keys without too much fuss?
